Rotary encoders of the incremental type , are so defined as signal increases ( changes ) with respect to a position taken as a reference, regardless of the direction of rotation. The incremental encoder is suitable for detecting rotations , speed and acceleration based on the counting of pulses sent by the sensor electronics output , but it requires the machine zero at each restart .
